Not only are these phones not crap, they are actually better than the previous versions. The reason for the low price point is that you can only get this price if you are signing up on a new activation with a 3-yr term and a voice & data plan (minimum $60/mth). If you were to buy the phone with no term, it would in fact be about $600 - $700.
